Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) is located in High Street at the eastern end of Maitland's City Centre adjoining the New England Highway (Les Darcy Drive) and High Street. MRAG welcomes visitors to the region and is also a valuable resource for local residents.
Architecturally designed by, Colonel W L Vernon, it is one of the most significant buildings in Maitland and, in fact, it has features which are of great importance statewide.
The decision by Maitland City Council (MCC) to approve a $4.5 million extension to Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) is an incredible opportunity to create an art gallery that can fulfill the growing cultural and educational needs of Maitland.
As a regional gallery MRAG will be anchored by an innovative concept which will ensure that the current historic buildings form part of a unifying structure together with the addition of new contemporary spaces. This concept will add to the MRAG experience which will be perceived as a cultural complex vibrating in art related activities rather than as a destination where a series of lifeless displays can be viewed.
