DRAFT CENTRAL MAITLAND STRUCTURE PLAN
The draft Central Maitland Structure Plan is a 30 year strategic plan which aims to re-establish Central Maitland as the primary centre in the Maitland local government area. Central Maitland is significant to the Maitland communtiy, but also regionally as the city, second only to Newcastle in the Lower Hunter Region.
The structure plan provides a clear direction to guide future development in Central Maitland towards a revitalised, vibrant centre for the enjoyment of residents, workers and visitors of Maitland.
The draft Central Maitland Structure Plan is based on:

A vision for Central Maitland suppported by a number of objectives;

A number of strategies to achieve the stated vision for the future; and

Specific actions and delivery mechanisms required to realise the proposed vision for Central Maitland.
DRAFT MAITLAND CENTRES STRATEGY
The draft Maitland Centres Strategy is a 25 year strategic plan which aims to identify the number, type, location and function of centres in Maitland. It does this by considering forecast population and employment growth, as well as predicting changing trends in shopping, services and job markets in the Hunter Region. It provides a clear direction to guide future development towards a hierarchy of centres that service regional, local and neighbourhood needs. The Strategy also promotes the regional role of Maitland CBD, second only to Newcastle in the Lower Hunter.
The draft Maitland Centres Strategy is based on:

An analysis of employment and retail trends

A survey of existing centres and employment areas to define their key characteristics

Demand and supply analysis

Principles of hierarchy and of strengthening centres.
Consultation on the draft Central Maitland Structure Plan and draft Maitland Centres Strategy commenced on Monday, 29 June 2009 for an eight (8) week period, concluding on Friday, 21 August 2009. Consultation on both documents is to ensure that residents and local business owners are informed about this stratetgic policy and have the opportunity to comment on the future direction of all centres in Maitland with particular attention on Central Maitland. Council is inviting comments on both the draft Central Maitland Structure Plan and Maitland Centres Strategy.
