Sustainable Transport in the Lower Hunter Region

The Lower Hunter Public Liaison Group (LHPTLG) was established in 2001 to cooperatively pursue the improvement of public transport services in the region.  The LHPTLG comprises Councillors and Officers from the five Lower Hunter Councils of Lake Macquarie, Newcastle, Port Stephens, Cessnock and Maitland.

The Issues Paper "Sustainable Transport in the Lower Hunter Region" prepared by Transit Planners Pty Ltd for the LHPTLG has recently been received by the five Lower Hunter Councils with Maitland City Council resolving to support the Group and its progression of matters in the Issues Paper.

This paper presents a discussion of the existing transport situation and various matters that should be addressed in order to foster sustainable transport patterns.  It highlights the need for substantial changes in transport management, rigorous analysis and modelling, and integration of transport services that are required if the Lower Hunter is to avoid the transportation problems that plague Sydney.
