Aboriginal Community Portrait

The 2013 Maitland City Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Portrait provides a statistical snapshot of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Maitland LGA. This has been done by pulling together data from the 2006 and 2011 Censuses, researching relevant federal and state policies and reports and undertaking consultation with local Aboriginal organisations, services and groups.

The purpose of the portrait is to get an indication of the social and economic health of Maitland City’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, which will in turn help Council further understand the key issues that the community are facing and respond to them in an appropriate way. The portrait can also be utilised by local organisations, services and groups who are developing projects and applying for funding to address the areas of disadvantage in the community.
