BLUE-GREEN ALGAE DETECTED AT TELARAH LAGOON
20 January 2012
Maitland City Council is advising a RED alert is in place for the presence of blue-green algae at Telarah Lagoon. This red alert follows laboratory testing of the lagoon’s water which revealed a high concentration of algae known as Anabaena.
Blue-green algae are microscopic cells that grow naturally in fresh and saline waters. When conditions are favourable for algae growth, blooms occur which can be seen as a green discolouration in the water or a surface scum on the water and around the waters edges like a green paint slick. Blooms also create a strong earthy smell. Favourable conditions for blue-green algae include high nutrient levels, slow flow, low wind and high temperatures.
Manager of Development and Environment David Simm says the red alert means algae numbers are in high range and are a potential health risk to people and animals.
