Maitland is a sporting community with a strong sporting culture. There are a wide range of sporting groups covering the traditional to the more obscure. Arguably, Maitland is best known for its rugby league team the ‘Pumpkin Pickers’, with a healthy contingent of supporters all donning the black and white to cheer them on. Maitland’s Walka Walkers
Supported by the Heart Foundation, these regular morning walks are held every Tuesday and Wednesday at Walka Water Works starting from 9.30am. Register online.Maitland Parkrun

A free weekly 5km event for runners of all standards, which takes place every Saturday at 8.00am at Walka Water Works. Religious Youth Groups
Many local religious groups provide youth activities. Check out the Follow Your Faith section to get in touch with a local religious group.
Maitland has a vibrant multicultural community with 11.92% of our residents indicating in the 2018 census they were born outside of Australia. We have seen the biggest growth since 2011, in our Zimbabwe population.
Each October, the city celebrates with its multicultural community through the Riverlights Multicultural Festival. Held in Central Maitland, the many cultural groups within our community come together to celebrate and showcase their diversity.
Mindaribba Local Aboriginal Land Council
Mindaribba Local Aboriginal Land Council (MLALC) is a social, health and learning hub for Maitland’s Aboriginal community, providing a wide range of services across housing, training, employment, health, learning and wellbeing. Located in Metford, the centre has an onsite preschool, health clinic, education centre, gymnasium and counselling service.
