Caring for the Incarcerated
Medical practitioners played key roles in early NSW history including the prison medical service. Following federation the prison medical service continued to influence and be influenced by national and international movements in medicine. This exhibition examines key moments from the last 200 years of the NSW Prison medical service. It seeks to address the longstanding questions around illness in prison and the response to it and invites visitors on a journey through this hidden history.
The exhibition will be opened in the Maitland Gaol Chapel in (exact date to be confirmed) December 2017 and will run through until 18 March 2018. Entry to the exhibition is included as part of the standard entry charges to the site.
