Open Museums, Open Minds
People seek to experience history and culture in diverse ways and not all museum experiences have walls. A museum experience could be an interpretive walk, a pop up creative installation, an open day around a series of buildings, temporary displays, collections or a series of monuments that can be found at different locations around a city. These experiences are more broadly referred to as an open air museum or open museum experience.
Phase one engagement results
Our first phase of engagement in 2017 revealed that understanding the history and heritage of Maitland was of high importance to our community. Citizens told us they learnt about Maitland’s history and heritage largely by visiting Maitland Gaol, Walka Water Works and Maitland Regional Art Gallery. Results further showed that residents have a keen interest in ‘old buildings and architecture’ and ‘historical events’ with a significant number of respondents indicating they would like to experience our history and heritage via non-traditional methods.
Have your say on phase two engagement
