Changes to Council facilities
A number of Council facilities have been impacted by the restrictions associated with COVID-19. In accordance with Australian Government advice and to ensure the health and safety of the community and our staff, closures or operational changes have made at the following facilities.
There are currently no changes to our residential waste services including kerbside collection and the operation of Mount Vincent Road Waste Management Centre. In addition, all street litter bins will continue to be collected and maintained as normal.
From Wednesday 25 March, Mount Vincent Waste Management Centre will no longer accept cash payments. This will minimise hand to hand contact and is for the safety of our people and the community.
The Waste Management Centre remains open 8.15am to 4.00pm every day (closed Good Friday and Christmas Day), for commercial waste and for Maitland City Council residents only with proof of residential address required for entry.
In addition, our Community Recycling Centre (CRC) located within the facility will only now accept steel, vegetation, timber, tyres and e-waste to protect our people and the community. Further information on what is no longer accepted at the CRC can be found on Council’s website.
In line with Government restrictions which limit travel for essential reasons only, residents are encouraged to not visit the Waste Facility and stay at home and stop the spread of COVID-19.
Council will be monitoring use of the Waste Management Centre and any further changes to opening hours or operations will be published on this page and residents should check for any changes before travelling to the Mt Vincent Road Facility.
Council’s Customer Experience Team are operating at their normal hours of 8.30am until 5.30pm Monday to Friday at Council's Administration Building. The team are available by phone, email & live chat from 8am-6pm, Monday to Friday.
Social distancing and hygiene measures will be in place, hand sanitiser will be available on entry and the Centre will be subject to a maximum capacity dependant on the size of the facility and in accordance with the NSW Government’s social distancing guidelines. All transactions will remain cashless.
Please note: Duty Desk for Planning will also be available during the hours of 8.30am to 12.30pm.
Maitland City Library Branches are operating at normal hours for borrowing, returns, click and collect, printing, copying and JP services.
East Maitland and Central Maitland branches are open Mondays 9.00am to 6.00pm, Tuesday to Thursday 9.00am to 7.00pm, Fridays 9.00am to 5.00pm and Saturdays 9.00am to 1.00pm. Rutherford and Thornton branches are open Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm and Saturdays 9.00am to 1.00pm.
Local Studies, Seed Library and public access computers are available. Early literacy programs including Baby Book Club and Storytime have resumed at all branches as well as library book clubs, complying with physical distancing requirements.
Hand sanitiser available on entry and branches will be subject to a maximum capacity dependant on the size of the facility and in accordance with the NSW Government’s social distancing guidelines.
MRAG is operating during their normal hours of 10.00am until 5.00pm Tuesday to Sunday. Bookings are not required however registration upon arrival is essential.

Seraphine Café is open from 8.00am - 3.00pm, Tuesday to Sunday.
The Gallery shop is open, with cashless preferred.
MRAG will be subject to a maximum capacity dependant on the size of the facility and in accordance with the NSW Government’s social distancing guidelines.
Maitland Gaol open to the public during its usual operating hours of 9.00am - 4.00pm Monday to Friday and 10.00am - 4.00pm weekends and public holidays.
Tours are available and bookings are required. For self-guided tours, you must bring your own device with the required app downloaded to conduct the tour. Please note that only cashless payments are accepted at this time.

Maitland Visitor Information Centre is open and operating during their normal hours of 10.00am until 3.00pm daily.
Hand sanitiser available on entry, sales will remain cashless and the site be subject to a maximum capacity dependant on the size of the facility and in accordance with the NSW Government’s social distancing guidelines.
Council tennis courts have reopened with restrictions.
Users of the facilities must adhere to social distancing guidelines, hand hygiene measures and comply with ongoing New South Wales Health advice. At this stage organised sporting competitions have not recommenced across New South Wales and as such use of these facilities is for personal recreational use only.
Council will continue to monitor the easing of restrictions by the New South Wales Government and will reopen services and facilities that currently remain closed as soon it is safe or practicable to do so.
Tenambit BMX Track has reopened with restrictions.
Users of the facilities must adhere to social distancing guidelines, hand hygiene measures and comply with ongoing New South Wales Health advice. At this stage organised sporting competitions have not recommenced across New South Wales and as such use of these facilities is for personal recreational use only.

Maitland Croquet Court has reopened with restrictions.

Skate parks across Maitland are now open with restrictions.
Users of the facilities must adhere to social distancing guidelines, hand hygiene measures and comply with ongoing New South Wales Health advice.
Outdoor playground and gym equipment across Maitland is open and available for use.
Please remember to always practise good hygiene and maintain physical distancing.
Bookings for Council parks and open spaces can be made via recreation@maitland.nsw.gov.au or by phoning 4934 9700. Council rangers will patrol local parks to monitor bookings and social distancing. Any users without bookings will be moved on in an effort keep our community is safe during this period and ensure that users with existing bookings have access to the space.
Council will commence reopening community centres and halls for regular hirers from Monday 15 June in accordance with NSW Government advice. All regular hirers must seek approval from Council by contacting recreation@maitland.nsw.gov.au prior to returning to venues.
East Maitland and Maitland Aquatic Centres are open. Bookings are not required.
Aqua Classes, and all Learn to Swim classes will be recommencing. Social distancing will be in place where practically possible for these lessons in line with the public health orders.
There will continue to be a limit to the maximum number of swimmers to a lane and patrons will be required to abide by social distancing of 1.5m unless in the same family.
