Management and disposal of domestic sharps

Community sharps disposal bins are provided across Maitland to ensure that sharps users have easy access to disposal facilities.

With people in our community relying on the use of domestic sharps to maintain their health, it is important to ensure that the community have appropriate infrastructure to dispose of potentially hazardous items in a safe manner. Domestic sharps include items such as needles, syringes, and lancets.

Disposal bins for domestic sharps are located at the following locations within the Maitland local government area:

  • Maitland Hospital - accessible 24/7
  • Cnr Lawes Street and High Street, East Maitland - accessible 24/7
  • Rutherford Community Centre - accessible Monday to Friday 9.00am to 4.00pm.

If you find a discarded needle or syringe in a public place, call the NSW Needle Clean Up Hotline on 1800 633 353. The hotline is staffed Monday to Friday 8.00am to 6.30pm, with an answering machine at other times.
