Council moving forward with new Delivery Program
At this week’s Council meeting, my fellow Councillors and I unanimously adopted the Delivery Program 2018-2021 and the Operational Plan 2018/19. It was an excellent outcome and means that we can now begin working on the many initiatives that have been included.
There are a number of highlights of course, but one in particular that I am excited about is the construction of the Gillieston Heights Community Hub. Initial works on the facility located at the corner of Redwood Drive and Pine Street have begun and it is scheduled for completion in April 2019.
In terms of the scope of works, the centre will include three activity rooms, office areas, a commercial kitchen, foyer and covered entry, as well as landscaping and car parking.
Once complete, it will provide a space for local organisations and community groups to meet and deliver a range of social programs, services and activities which address the social needs of the Gillieston Heights community. I know that this is something that the people who live in Gillieston Heights have been asking for and it is wonderful that after significant planning and consultation, it is starting to take shape.
If any of our other local community centres across the city are anything to go by, this centre will play an integral role in encouraging community interaction and the enhancement of community wellbeing. It has been designed with flexibility in mind, so I can’t wait to see what the centre will be utilised for. I’m imagining, local dance groups, seniors groups, playgroups and after school care as all possible future uses for the site.
The community centre is but one of the many initiatives that will be completed as part of Council’s Delivery Program 2018–2021, which will see an injection of $470 million into services, activities and projects over the three year term of Council. I am personally eager to see these projects and initiatives come to fruition and watch as our community and city continues to change and grow for the better.
