Jets and Mariners to go head to head in Maitland
Earlier this week I had the pleasure of announcing that Maitland No. 1 Sportsground will host a trial match between the Newcastle Jets and the Central Coast Mariners on Saturday, 25 August. Personally, I am a big admirer of the skills of our local footballers so I can’t wait for the match.
As many of you would remember, the sportsground hosted a successful rugby league trial match between the Knights and the Eels in February. We had a great crowd, a wonderful atmosphere and it caused such a unique buzz around the city. I anticipate that this football match will be no different.
Sporting events like this one are so important because they provide us with the opportunity to showcase our amazing sport loving city on a large scale and attract visitation from outside Maitland. The Jets had such an amazing run to the grand final last year and I think playing a match in Maitland might just be the perfect way to start their 2018/19 season. I applaud both the Jets and the Mariners for getting behind this and I would also like to thank Council staff and everyone involved for making it happen. I know that football means a lot to the Maitland community so I’m confident this match will be appreciated by locals and also enjoyed by visitors to the city.
Maitland has been a great breeding ground for football stars over the years. Clubs like Maitland FC play a key role in the development of the sport here, so it was great to see representatives from Maitland FC working with Council on this initiative.
