Splash of colour for Central Maitland
I was at The Levee earlier this week and was so happy to discover the new mural at the Bourke Street Link.
The work is thanks to talented artist Patricia Van Lubeck and it’s called ‘The New One’. On doing some digging I discovered that it represents the welcoming community of Maitland and it aims to capture the moment when a newcomer arrives to the city. I found out that the idea is that The New One does not have to wait long before he or she is made comfortable and included in Maitland. The trees in the work also symbolise how we are all different, yet similar, and we are stronger together than we are apart. I think these are all very important messages and it definitely comes across in the work.
The install of the mural is part of The Levee’s Going Global theme this season and it was funded by Council’s Place Activation program. I love being surprised by different spaces that just suddenly come alive and this work is particularly special. If you haven’t seen it in the flesh, go check it out.
Open Museums Open Minds
Thanks to a comprehensive report that went to Council on Tuesday, I recently found out a lot more about the Open Museums Open Minds initiative. This is a wonderful project and it’s great that Council has decided to play a significant role in preserving the city’s historical collections and shows that it wants to collaboratively establish sustainable and contemporary museum experiences for the people of Maitland.
An action plan is now being developed for Open Museums Open Minds so keep your ear to the ground because there is much more to come. If you want to read the report you can view the agenda here.
