Sydney Symphony Orchestra performs Verdi's Requiem
Local music lovers are in for a treat with a world class performance of Verdi’s Requiem by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (SSO) streamed directly from the Sydney Opera House to Maitland Library on Thursday 21 June.
In partnership with the State Library of NSW, Maitland City Library will stream the performance live to a local Maitland audience.
State Librarian Dr John Vallance welcomes this exciting collaboration and expresses the hope that it will be the first of many. ‘Public libraries across New South Wales are increasingly becoming cultural centres for their communities,’ said Vallance.
City Librarian Keryl Collard says ‘Libraries are actively connecting their communities with new ideas and experiences. And increasingly, we’re leveraging technology and partnerships to bring world class speakers and performances to local audiences. The live-streaming of Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Verdi’s Requiem is a wonderful example of this.’
The performance marks Australia’s first participation in international Make Music Day, a world wide celebration of music on 21 June. Originally launched in 1982 as Fête de la Musique in France, the annual celebration of music was renamed Make Music Day and has since evolved into a global event involving 800 cities in 120 countries.
SSO Chief Executive Officer, Emma Dunch, says that the Sydney Symphony Orchestra is excited to headline Australia’s first participation in Make Music Day. ‘Music is a universal language and we’re thrilled to share Verdi’s Requiem with music lovers wherever they are,’ said Dunch.
The Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Verdi’s Requiem will be conducted by international opera and concert conductor, Oleg Caetani, and feature Angel Blue (soprano), Catherine Carby (mezzo-soprano), Diego Torre (tenor) and Jérôme Varnier (bass) as soloists and The Sydney Philharmonia Choirs. Over 100 instrumentalists and 120 singers will perform in this operatic masterpiece.
