Developing our Economy
Council is committed to providing an environment that supports and stimulates economic growth by:
Encouraging employment generating industry and boosting export oriented or import replacing companies.
- Running a successful program of events and activations throughout the year to drive visitation to Central Maitland.
- Investing in key infrastructure projects to drive business and enhance liveability.
- Partnering with Service NSW to simplify the process for locals to start, run and grow a business through the Easy to do Business program.
- Connecting businesses with the right support including specialist advice, training and funding opportunities.
Centrally located to the Hunter Valley's mining, wine and agriculture industries, Maitland is a logical choice for value added manufacturing such as food processing companies and mining support. Manufacturing and construction remain two of Maitland's core economic drivers and will continue to value add and support other sectors within the industrial chain.
Commerce is thriving with the revitalisation and ongoing development of our business precincts. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have used Maitland as a springboard for entrepreneurship creating an appealing retail mix to match the already flourishing professional services, health industry and visitor economy.
Maitland has embarked on an urban renewal pilot project called Create Maitland to activate vacant properties in key commercial sites by offering short term tenures for creatives.
For Create Maitland to further develop an ongoing commitment is needed from property owners to provide access to a suitable and available property. To achieve this, a Create Maitland Prospectus of interested creatives and makers looking for a space and details of their offering was compiled in 2019.
If you're an interested property owner or creative and you want to find out more, contact Council's Business Liaison Officer Nicole Dickson by calling 0429 621 918 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also view FAQs for property owners and creatives.

When planning for economic development, the goal is to create and maintain a strong, vibrant local economy.
Council, together with a broad range of stakeholders, will prepare an Economic Development Strategy for Maitland. Objectives will be focused on creating the conditions for Maitland to prosper and to ensure that the local economy continues to grow and that the workforce is suitably skilled to support future economic growth.
Responsibility for achieving these outcomes will sit with a range of agencies, from Council and government organisations through to the local business community.
Over the coming months we will be engaging with the local business community through a survey. If you own or operate a business in Maitland, this will be your opportunity to tell us your issues and ideas to help us work towards the continued growth of a prosperous and vibrant city.
