Why do business in Maitland?
Maitland combines the best of urban and regional.
Maitland has terrific amenity - quality schools, diverse employment options, a vibrant arts scene, recreation and services - as well as open space. Established around the meandering Hunter River, Maitland's iconic historical buildings, heritage townships, shopping precincts and industrial hubs combine to create a unique and welcoming character.
Significant investment in Maitland is revitalising the city. The redevelopment of The Levee and The Riverlink have transformed the centre, and infrastructure projects such as the No. 1 Sportsground and new Maitland Administration Centre are creating employment opportunities and bolstering visitation to Central Maitland. Another city shaping project is the new Maitland Hospital development at East Maitland, which will ensure our expanding resident base has access to outstanding health care.
Maitland has an array of housing and land options, including a number of new land releases. The diversity and affordability of housing stock is underpinning our steady population growth, and healthy demographic spread.
Accessible by road, rail, air and sea, Maitland is located:
- near two major transport routes - M1 Pacific Motorway and New England Highway
- on the Hunter Line - with Intercity trains linking to Newcastle and NSW TrainLink Regional trains connecting to Sydney, the Hunter Valley and New England
- on the the Hunter Valley rail network - one of the busiest and most diverse freight networks in the country, that extends 1,400km from the Port of Newcastle to Muswellbrook, where it spans west along the Ulan Line and north towards Moree
- just 30 kilometres from Newcastle Airport and the Port of Newcastle
- two hours from Sydney
Maitland's outstanding connectivity makes it a desirable place for businesses - and residents - who want to connect with local and international markets.
Centrally located to the Hunter Valley's agriculture, wine, resources, manufacturing and construction sectors, Maitland is a logical choice for tourism, value added manufacturing, freight and logistics operators.
Maitland has a diverse economy led by the construction, manufacturing and rental/real estate industries. Maitland's annual output is estimated at $9.7 billion.
There are a broad range of employment pathways in the Maitland catchment. The health care and social assistance sector is the largest employer, followed by retail trade and construction. The development of the new Maitland Hospital in East Maitland and the new Maitland Administration Centre in Central Maitland are creating hundreds of jobs for construction and operational workers.
We're home to over 23,000 registered businesses, with a significant cohort of professional, scientific and financial services. Our business community is growing, with over 1,300 new businesses created last financial year.
Maitland continues to navigate the economic challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The diversity of our economy puts us in a strong position to adapt to change and respond to adversity. More detail on how Maitland City Council is supporting businesses is available here.
