The late Irene Hemsworth devoted herself to serving Maitland from her early teens and throughout her life, contributing across schools, sporting clubs, church, and community organisations. From teaching scripture and coaching netball to fundraising, volunteering, and mentoring, Irene's commitment created opportunities and support for generations of people in Maitland.
A Freeman of the City of Maitland (2014), former Citizen of the Year (1989), and a 2025 posthumous recipient of the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM), Irene's service exemplified generosity, care, and civic pride. Through her work, she strengthened the community's fabric and inspired those around her.
Her dedication extended beyond formal roles; she delivered Meals on Wheels, assisted in nursing homes, organised debutant balls, and contributed to cancer support and heart research initiatives. Irene's legacy of service, leadership, and community spirit continues to resonate across Maitland.
