Local Strategic Planning Statement
Council is preparing a draft Local Strategic Planning Statement (LSPS) to set out a 20 year vision for land use planning in Maitland.
The LSPS will explain how Council intends to manage population growth while respecting the existing character of the city's suburbs and community values.
Council needs to consider what land types the community will need for the future in terms of housing, employment, community facilities, transport and the environment as well as how Council will address global trends like climate change and advances in technology.
The LSPS will explain how state and regional plans, such as the Hunter Regional Plan 2036 and the Greater Newcastle Metropolitan Plan 2036, will be implemented in the Maitland LGA. The LSPS will identify the challenges that the local area will face over the next 20 years and look at how the existing controls in the Maitland Local Environmental Plan 2011 and Maitland Development Control Plan 2011 may need to change to meet the community's needs - now and in the future.
Development of the document will be informed by community feedback collected over the past three years for projects such as the review of the Community Strategic Plan 'Maitland +10', the Community Satisfaction Surveys in 2016 and 2018, the Maitland Urban Settlement Strategy review, internal consultation with staff and Councillors as well as specific community input.
Have your say
Community consultation for the LSPS has closed. To help inform the LSPS, Council sought community input throughout November using an interactive mapping tool, workshops and a series of community pop up stalls. More than 2,000 interactions and comments have been recorded with more than 1,100 stakeholders. Thank you to everyone who provided input into the development of this important document.
Staff will now collate and analyse data to help inform development of the draft Local Strategic Planning Statement. It's anticipated the draft document will be placed on public exhibition for further community feedback in April-May 2020.
