Maitland Mayor Philip Penfold with stacks of second-hand books at Maitland Town Hall

Bumper pre-loved book sale lands at Maitland Town Hall this November

Maitland libraries are inviting local residents to discover that pre-loved books can still be powerful page-turners, during a bumper book sale event on Saturday 8 November.

Eager readers and bright-eyed bookworms can buy and fill a tote bag with as many titles as they can for just $5.

Maitland City Council Coordinator Community Participation Erin Pascall said “there is a treasure trove of second-hand books waiting to be discovered – from fiction favourites to graphic novels, picture books, magazines and DVDs, there is something for everyone.

“We’re continually refreshing and renewing our collections, and this is a wonderful way to share the love of literacy and reading with our local community by giving these stories a second life.”

“What’s more, a selection of items from our popular toy library will be individually priced and available for purchase, so there’s ample opportunity for the savvy and sustainability-conscious shopper to snag a bargain ahead of the holiday season.”

The event runs alongside the first weekend of Garage Sale Trail, Australia’s biggest second-hand treasure hunt.

Ms Pascall said the Garage Sale Trail initiative was “encouraging people to rethink waste.”

“We want to keep useable items out of landfill by choosing to reuse where possible,” she said.

“Libraries have always been champions of reuse. Giving books multiple lives through lending , sharing and now rehoming.

“These books have worked hard in our collections – shared across families, borrowed by curious minds, and loved by many, and now they’re ready for a new chapter.”

Maitland libraries’ Book Sale will run at Maitland Town Hall (263 High Street, Maitland) from 9am to 1pm on Saturday 8 November. Pre-purchase your entry ticket online to avoid missing out at mait.city/BookSale.
