Nicholas Enright was one of Australia’s most important and prolific playwrights, achieving national and international success. Among many awards were two Green Room Awards for Best Play, and four Gold AWGIE Awards, the 1998 Sidney Myer Performing Arts Award and the NSW Premier's Special Award, as well as an Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay and a posthumous AM. The depth and range of his writing was notable, including plays, film scripts, verse and musicals. His Maitland and Morpeth String Quartet, turned into a short animated film narrated by Ruth Cracknell, is a treasured piece of Maitland’s local history.
