Major redevelopment works at Maitland Gaol will transform the historic site into a vibrant precinct and iconic destination for the Hunter, driven by its unique heritage, connection to the community and innovative experiences.

Through State, Federal and Council funding, over $11.7 million has been allocated for stage of the Maitland Gaol redevelopment – this includes investment in boutique accommodation, a new activity hub, innovative interpretation of the site and the provision of new event infrastructure.

Access to the Gaol site will be opened up through the existing walls, allowing for enhanced community access to the activity hub and internal courtyard area.

Additionally, work is underway on the development and implementation of a new Tower Experience at Maitland Gaol, following Council securing $129,000 in grant funding via Destination NSW.

The new tower experience will offer patrons of Maitland Gaol, both new and returning, a new perspective of an old site. When the new attraction opens in 2023, Maitland Gaol patrons can expect to climb up and tour the site’s historic gantries.
