About Morpeth Bridge Lighting

First opened in 1898, heritage listed Morpeth Bridge has served as an important link between Morpeth and the surrounding farmland for over a century.

The official opening on Wednesday 15 June 1898 was attended by 800 schoolchildren and 1,500 other spectators who witnessed the new structure declared open by the Minister for Works, Mr J.H. Young, and Mayoress Mrs R Sim.

The bridge is a two lane, three span structure supported by cylindrical cast iron piers and is the oldest of only three remaining overhead braced timber truss road bridges in service in New South Wales.

In 2010, the bridge underwent significant rehabilitation works, to prolong its lifespan and sure up its status as an iconic sight in the Maitland local government area.

Morpeth Bridge lighting

To commemorate Morpeth’s bicentenary celebrations in 2022, architectural lighting was installed on Morpeth Bridge. The bridge lighting is activated 60 minutes prior to sunset until 10.30pm every night, and can be themed around significant events, causes and occasions. In the past, these have included Christmas, Valentine’s Day and International Women’s Day.
