Big news for local museum
On Tuesday, I joined Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald as he announced that the Maitland Regional Museum’s exhibition ‘Journeys: Maitland is my Home’ would receive $5,000 of funding under the NSW Government’s Country Arts Support Program.
The exhibition will tell the stories of the different groups who have called Maitland home over the years, starting with the area’s first indigenous inhabitants to more recent arrivals, such as the Sudanese community.
This funding is vital because it will now enable the stories of historical and current communities to be told on a bigger scale. Maitland is a place of nationally significant heritage and the city is built on the contribution of locals so this is a chance to really recognise that.
The museum operates out of Brough House on Church Street so if you haven’t been before I recommend you do so. It’s a great space with a lot to offer.
Celebration for Green Hills Connectivity Centre
Earlier this week I also attended a celebration for the Maitland Connectivity Centre, an employment initiative of Multiplex and Stockland that brings together employment services groups, employers, job seekers and community groups in response to youth unemployment in Maitland. Over the course of the two years of redevelopment at Stockland Green Hills, the centre has placed more than 180 people in jobs, well in excess of their initial target of 100. What’s important though is that most of the people were placed in sustainable roles or jobs that actually lead somewhere and I think that’s key. Now that the program has wrapped up, in line with the Stockland redevelopment, I hope that local employment groups can keep up their great work and we can continue in this fight against youth unemployment.
Just a quick note to wish everyone a happy Easter and a wonderful long weekend. If you’re after chocolate there are some great little spots in Maitland so please shop locally and if you’re on the road, double demerits are in place so please remember to take it easy.
