Bolwarra Landcare returns and is calling for volunteers
All are welcome to join the group that meets on the third Sunday of each month, starting this Sunday 15 May, behind the John Wilkinson Sporting Complex in Bolwarra from 9.00am to 11.00am.
Local Landcare Coordinator for the Lower Hunter Stacy Mail says ‘it’s fantastic to be starting Landcare again in the area. We need people from the community to get behind this initiative to create these green spaces for the future of Maitland.’
This group is one of many that are planned to be set up around the Maitland local government area by the Hunter Regional Landcare Network with support from Maitland City Council.
Following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding last year between Council and the Hunter Regional Landcare Network, Council has committed to supporting Landcare groups by helping set up new sites on public land and on ground support such as training, tools and seedlings.
Within the first year of signing, Council has committed to setting up two new sites on public land and will continue to expand the program based on community interest and feedback.
Council’s Manager Environment & Sustainability Catherine Pepper says ‘we want to thank the people who have been coming down to take part in the planting days and working bees recently held at this site.
‘We’re delighted to see the enthusiasm and passion in the Maitland community for the environment and hope that this translates to a growth in Landcare sites across the City.’
To ensure any new Landcare sites set up are undisturbed by private land sales or other events outside of the group’s control, Council will, in the future, be proposing a list of publicly owned sites needing rehabilitation.
For those who are interested in joining an existing Landcare group or starting their own, visit the Hunter Regional Landcare Network website.
