Celebrate what makes our country great
This week I want to encourage you to attend the Australia Day celebrations at Maitland Park, proudly presented by The Mutual.
For me, Australia Day has always been a great opportunity to pause and reflect on how lucky we are to live in this country. Growing up in Australia has been a privilege and one I try not to take for granted. In Maitland, in particular, we have a community that respects our past and I believe we have a community committed to building an exciting and prosperous future, which is something to be celebrated. Together we have achieved some great things and overcome big challenges and I’m really excited to see what the future holds for us.
This weekend’s event is about celebrating our ‘Aussie Icons’ and following a barbecue breakfast courtesy of the East Maitland Lions Club, there will be a range of free activities that the whole family can get involved in. These include gold panning, Great Barrier Reef fishing, Australian Animal’s Kid’s Craft and much more. We have also got Kumar Pereira as our Australia Day Ambassador. He’s a graphic designer with a background in welfare and he has even appeared on Masterchef Australia so I am interested in hearing what he has to say.
There will be free entry to Maitland Pool from 10.00am until 3.00pm, which is perfect for anyone who wants to cool down.
This Saturday we will also announce our Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year. We had a host of great nominees and if you come on the weekend, you’ll learn a little bit about each of them. There will also be an official citizenship ceremony which will see over 30 locals become Australian citizens.
Whatever you get up to this weekend, stay safe, have a good time and be sure to spend some time with those Aussies who mean the most to you.
