Come and see Maitland Gaol 20 Years On
The Open Day, which is on from 10.00am until 4.00pm, will give visitors an opportunity to view the Gaol, take a look at the new and travelling exhibitions, and enjoy lots more fun on the day.
The event will feature a range of children’s activities, food trucks, a barbeque courtesy of Morpeth Men’s Shed, a Devonshire tea by the East Maitland CWA, garden talks and trackless train tours outside the gates. The Maitland Musical Society will be presenting performances of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial by Jury on the day and poetry prison readings will also entertain visitors. In addition to all that, access to usually restricted areas will be granted and there will be the option to participate in self guided audio tours by downloading the Maitland Gaol tour app to personal devices.
The Open Day is the ideal opportunity to check out the Gaol, especially if you haven’t been before.
As part of 20 Years On, Maitland Gaol has hosted a number of travelling exhibitions (including Behind These Walls, Captured: Portraits of Crime 1870-1930 and Caring for the Incarcerated), and there will also be an official commemoration on Monday 29 January hosted by Maitland Mayor Loretta Baker. Access to this event will be by invitation only so if you’re interested in attending, call 4936 6482.
