Deng Adut to speak at Maitland's Australia Day Ceremony
Criminal lawyer, refugee and public figure Deng Adut will feature as the keynote speaker at Maitland’s Official Australia Day Ceremony in 2020.
A self made man, Adut, who epitomises the Australian values of multiculturalism and ‘a fair go’, will speak to Maitland residents about his journey which started in a peaceful village on the River Nile, and has seen the now lawyer overcome a harrowing childhood in the midst of war.
Maitland Mayor, Cr Loretta Baker says ‘We are thrilled to welcome 2017 NSW Australian of the Year, Deng Adut to Maitland as part of Maitland’s Official Australia Day Ceremony.
‘To draw courage from adverse circumstances and build an inspirational career while providing motivation to those around him speaks to Mr Adut’s character, and I am grateful that the Maitland community, including our newest citizens, will have the opportunity to hear from him first hand on Australia Day’.
For the first time, Maitland’s Official Australia Day Ceremony, which also includes Maitland’s Australia Day Awards and citizenship ceremony, will be held indoors at Maitland Town Hall from 10.00am on Sunday 26 January. The Maitland community is invited to attend but for those who cannot attend in person, the ceremony including keynote address, Australia Day Awards and citizenship ceremony will also be live streamed on Council’s website.
Deng Adut comes to Maitland as the first speaker in Maitland City Library’s 2020 Look Who’s Talking program.
Following the official ceremony, family friendly activities will continue as The Mutual Presents Australia Day in Maitland Park including free entry to Maitland Aquatic Centre, free BBQ lunch and other activities from 12 noon until 5.00pm.
