Maitland Rural Lands Strategy 2021-2041
Maitland is well known and loved for its scenic rural backdrop and a clear plan on how to manage these areas are a priority for Council. Over the next six months, Council will be working with external consultants to produce the Maitland Rural Lands Strategy 2021-2041, which will critically review current rural land zoning and trends in local agriculture for future land use.
The Rural Lands Strategy's goal is to provide a framework on how rural lands are managed in terms of their value to the local economy, environment, and the community. The document will investigate ways Council can encourage better agriculture practices and provide clear guidelines to protect food security for Maitland's future.
Rural and Aboriginal Heritage Study
The Rural and Aboriginal Heritage Study is an exciting first for Council that will see the surveying and identification of heritage areas in rural zoned land.
The study seeks to help Council gain a heightened cultural understanding of significant places across the Local Government Area (LGA). Meanings[RM2] will be explained and protected across cultural landscapes of Aboriginal significance and agricultural lands farmed for generations.
A goal of the study will be to help inform better planning processes such that residential growth does not compromise the rural or cultural identity of the LGA. Specifically, it will include community consultation, detailed mapping, a thematic history and a cultural heritage management strategy for identified places and sites.
