Maitland the place to be this long weekend
To kick things off on Friday we’ve got our Australia Day festivities happening at Maitland Park. Australia Day is a great opportunity to celebrate our country and be grateful for what we have here. It’s also a chance to recognise your fellow Australians and understand that the day means different things to different people. This Friday is also special as we’re presenting the awards for Maitland Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year, and we’ve also got a number of locals set to become Australian citizens.
The long weekend will roll on come Saturday with the Summer in Maitland Celebrations at The Levee happening from 5.00pm to 9.00pm. There will be a wide range of entertainment, food and activities happening on the riverside of The Levee and the Riverside Walk. I’m particularly looking forward to simply rolling out the picnic rug and taking in some live music. You can find out more about the celebrations here.
Things aren’t slowing down on Sunday either with an Open Day happening at Maitland Gaol. It’s been 20 years since the facility ceased to operate as a prison and to recognise this the gaol is opening its gates to visitors, at just the cost of a gold coin donation. There is so much happening on the day including trackless train tours, a range of games and activities for the kids, presentations, various performances, and some food and drink will also be available for purchase. Maitland Gaol has become a unique part of the fabric of Maitland over the years and if you haven’t visited before this open day is the perfect opportunity to do so.
Whatever you get up to I wish you an enjoyable long weekend and just a reminder that if you’re on the road, please take it easy. Don’t forget too, that if you’re on social media make sure you #MyMaitland
