New red bin collection option gives Maitland residents more flexibility and savings
Maitland households producing less general waste can now choose to switch from the default weekly red general waste bin collection to a fortnightly service, helping to reduce landfill and cut costs. The optional service will take effect from 1 September and follows the successful introduction of FOGO and weekly green bin collections.
Residents who opt in to fortnightly collection during the initial registration period from 1 to 31 August will receive an $80 discount on their 2025-26 Domestic Waste Management Charge, backdated to 1 July 2025 on their November rates notice.
Manager Environment and Sustainability, Catherine Pepper, says the new service provides flexibility for households that consistently produce low levels of general waste.
“We’re encouraging residents to take a moment to consider whether the service is right for them,” said Ms Pepper.
“It’s a great choice for many households already putting out red bins that are only half full. If that sounds like you, switching to fortnightly is a smart way to reflect your habits and save a little money, while helping us work toward a more sustainable future.”
The optional service collects red bins every second week, alternating with the yellow recycling bin for participating households.
To ensure accurate service delivery, Council will update its collection database and install new red bin lids and service stickers at participating properties.
Key details:
- Opt in between 1 and 31 August to receive the full $80 discount (applied to November rates notices for the 2025-26 financial year and renewed annually).
- No cancellation fee or lock-in period applies during August.
- From 1 September, the discount will be prorated based on the opt-in date.
- Residents can switch back to a weekly collection at any time. Switching back after 1 September will incur a $50 cancellation fee, and render the home ineligible to opt in to fortnightly services again for a minimum of three months.
- No action is required for residents who want to keep their weekly red bin collection.
- Renters keen to opt in should speak with their property manager or landlord, as domestic waste services and charges are linked to the property and included on the owner’s rates notice.
- Residents can opt in by completing the bin change form at mait.city/change-bins
The initiative aligns with Council’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy, Waste Management Policy, and Community Strategic Plan, supporting action to build more sustainable and resilient communities.
