School holiday fun in Maitland
With the school holidays beginning on Monday, I thought it would be a good idea to share just some of the great Council led activities that will be happening across Maitland over the next couple of weeks. From stargazing on the riverbank to dusting for fingerprints behind bars, there’s lots on that is sure to keep the kids entertained.
The Levee Central Maitland
The Levee has established itself as a great place for activities and events and for the first time, there will be a free stargazing workshop these holidays. The Newcastle Astronomical Society is running the workshop, which is happening from 6.00pm on Monday 8 July, on the Riverside Walk near The Bourke Street Link. All are welcome and the kids will no doubt learn a lot about our solar system. The Levee is also hosting Street Eats MX Nationals Edition on Friday 12 July. The seventh round of the MX Nationals is coming to Maitland so to welcome riders and spectators, Council’s popular Street Eats will be setting up in The Shared Zone. Team trucks and bikes will also be there to inspect so take the kids along.
Maitland Regional Art Gallery
As usual, the Gallery has lots of activities and exhibitions on during the school holidays. The Gallery will have free ‘Art Trails’, Family Fun Workshops and Free Art Sunday activities so go to mrag.org.au to plan your visit.
Maitland City Library
The theme is ‘Arty Farty’ at our libraries these school holidays and there are a number of different activities kids can get involved in. It’s all about creativity, both real and imagined. Some activities will fill fast so to find out more or to book, click here.
Maitland Gaol
Along with the usual tours, Maitland Gaol will also be offering a couple of great school holiday activities. They include Junior Sleuth Fingerprinting, where kids can dust for fingerprints and solve crimes, and Workhouse Woes – Butter Making, which is about demonstrating one of the many activities prisoners got up to while they were in gaol.
Maitland Pool
The heated indoor pool at Maitland Aquatics Centre will also be running throughout the school holiday break, meaning kids can have a dip at any time, regardless of the weather outside. There are also different classes and programs running and you can find out more here.
