Road safety programs

Council coordinates a number of road safety programs each year that are available for different road users throughout our community. If you are interested in finding out more, please contact Council by calling 02 4934 9700 or by emailing [email protected]

Young drivers

Statistics show that young drivers 17 to 20 years are three times more likely to be involved in casualty crashes. Council conducts free two hour workshops for parents and other supervisors of learner drivers locally to help you with practical advice about:supervising learner drivers, completing the Learner Driver Log Book, and the benefits of driving practice.

Take a look at Council's event calendar for upcoming workshops. Advertisements will also be placed in local newspapers and sent to local high schools in the month prior to workshops. Bookings are essential as places are limited.

Contact Councils Road Safety Officer on 02 4934 9700 for further information and to book.

Safety around schools

Keeping kids safe as they get to and from school is everyone’s responsibility. Morning drop offs and afternoon pick ups are very busy traffic times around all schools. The safety of children near schools is dependent on all road users to be aware and adhere to the road rules. So the speed you travel, the place you park and your driving behaviour impacts directly on safety of every child.

The Keeping our kids safe brochure details information about the rules around schools and what all adults need to do increase safety at your school.

Families have an important role in supporting their children’s road safety education by providing advice and guidance. As role models, you are an important influence on how your children behave. By following proper road safety habits and driving practices, families can send positive safety messages to their children and help them learn to be responsible for their own safety.

Transport for NSW work with education providers on road safety resources that forms an essential part of the curriculum. Safety Town for primary school age and On The Move for secondary school age has resources for both teachers and parents to educate and reinforce safety in all road environments.

Road safety issues around schools are managed by state and local government agencies. Although the roles and responsibilities of the agencies vary, school principals must approve any request before the agencies responsible are contacted.

Safer seniors

Council's Road Safety Officer can attend your service group as a guest speaker covering topics such as requirements for keeping your licence as you age, health and driving, being a safe active senior, keeping safe out walking and transition to not driving. To enquire or book a talk for your group please contact the Road Safety Officer on 02 4934 9700.

Information is also available from Transport for NSW - Centre for Road Safety on staying on the road 65 plus.

Managing fatigue

Fatigue is one of the big three killers on NSW roads, with fatigue related crashes twice as likely to be fatal because drivers who are asleep can't brake.

In 2012 more people in NSW died in fatigue related crashes than drink driving crashes, while being awake for about 17 hours has a similar effect on performance as a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.05.

Sleep is the only cure for tiredness - 'Don't trust your tired self'.
