Cr Kanchan Ranadive
First term councillor, Cr Kanchan Ranadive, fell in love with Maitland when she moved to the Hunter from Pune, India, in 2002. Her husband, who is an equine vet, was head hunted for a job at a thoroughbred stud farm and the couple haven’t looked back.
The pair have a son together and Kanchan, who has a background in engineering and works as a bank manager, made the decision to run because she wanted to bring more diversity to Council.
‘Maitland is a growing area and I thought I could offer something in regards to creating a fresh future for the city. Over the next term I’d love to see a growth in business and education opportunities, as well as more built infrastructure to support our booming population.’
She believes she’ll thrive in her role as a councillor because she’s approachable, a good listener and understanding. She also prides herself on finding good resolutions to tough problems.
Kanchan is a big fan of Indian music and the Bollywood scene, and she’s a keen reader with a special love of the history genre. She’s also into her cricket and loves supporting the Aussies when she’s with her Indian friends and of course the Indians when she’s with her Aussie mates.
