The future of bins and waste
We’re changing the way we do waste in response to a state government directed target of 80% waste diverted away from landfill by 2030.
The result of what you told us will help direct our future plans for red bin pick up frequency, recycling, kerbside bulky waste, mattress recycling and more.
In 2024, general food waste like (fruit and vegetable scraps, meat?, processed foods?) will be able to be placed in your green bin rather than your red bin, along with your garden waste materials like cuttings and grass. As a result, your green bin service will increase from once a fortnight to once a week and the size of the bin will remain the same. (education only, no consultation on this)
Currently almost a quarter (24%) of the average Maitland household red bin is made up of food waste
FOGO is a legislated State Government requirement of all Councils in NSW by 2024.
From November 2022, all households will be provided a recycle bag to place soft plastics, textiles (clothes), small electronic waste items (like what?) lightbulbs, and batteries. Residents then book a collection time for these to be collected - how? An app?
If the trail is widely supported, the service will likely continue. Is this correct?
A new textile recovery bin will also be provided at Waste Facilities from this year to ease the amount of clothes and textiles currently being landfilled.
Yellow lidded recycling bin was introduced.
Green lidded garden organics bin was introduced.
FOGO service will be introduced.
80% will be diverted from landfield
