Blue Green Algae are microscopic cells that occur naturally but can bloom when conditions are favourable. Blooms appear as thick paint like accumulation on the water's surface or as small green floating dots and have a distinctive earthy smell.
Maitland City Council's Manager Environment and Sustainability Catherine Pepper says 'during warmer periods of weather Blue Green Algae can be a risk in any water body.
'Once an algal bloom has developed, there isn't much authorities can do to reverse the situation except wait for a change in weather conditions. Council will continue to monitor the lagoons at Walka Water Works, Telarah and Rathluba for Blue Green Algae growth'.
Blue Green Algae can be a serious human health and environmental problem, with algae toxins' potential to cause severe skin irritation and stomach upset.
Domestic pets and livestock can also be impacted if they contact water affected by an algal bloom. The toxins in Blue Green Algae cannot be removed through boiling the water, and if people believe they or their animals have been affected by Algae toxins, they should seek medical attention.
To help reduce the likelihood of a bloom occurring in Maitland's water bodies this summer the community is encouraged to decrease the level of nutrients going into local waterways by washing vehicles on the grass, removing leaves and grass clippings from gutters and by applying fertilisers only as per packaging instructions.
Should you notice considerable Blue Green Algae blooms that are of concern please contact Council's environment team on 02 4934 9700.
