Maitland Netball Courts to receive second round of upgrades
Maitland City Council has been successful in receiving $1 million in NSW State Government funding for Stage 2 of the Maitland Park Netball Courts reconstruction project. The project will be joint funded by the Regional Sport Facility Fund 2021/22 along with co-contributions of $460,000 from Council and $300,000 from Maitland Netball Association.
The funding will deliver upgrade works including the complete reconstruction and resurfacing of 15 courts and installation of energy efficient LED floodlighting for match play. This succeeds the Stage 1 developments in July 2020 which saw over $1.3m used towards the remaining courts’ reconstruction and additional floodlighting, and will complete the overall $3m project.
Following the completion of the final stage, the facility will be the only netball facility outside of the Sydney Metropolitan area at a regional standard and will result in increased participation, reduced maintenance cost and time, reduced injuries to players and the opportunity to attract more regional and state events.
Mayor of Maitland, Cr Loretta Baker, says, ‘We’re so excited to continue the reconstruction project of the netball courts at Maitland Park thanks to the funding from State Government and contributions of Maitland Netball Association.
‘This project is a terrific example of the significant projects that are often accomplished when clubs and Council co-contribute and work together.
‘Our local netball teams have already experienced the benefits from the first stage of the project, and this will only add to the excellent quality of our community sporting facilities.’
Member for Maitland, Jenny Aitcheson MP says, ‘I congratulate Maitland City Council and Maitland Netball Association for successfully securing this funding.
‘It’s great to provide funding for a facility that will cater not just for our growing population in Maitland but for the region and wider. When this project is completed and COVID travel restrictions are eased, regional carnivals in Maitland will provide a much needed economic boost for many local businesses.’
Maitland Netball Association President, Kim Starkey, says, ‘This is a major win for our netball members who have contributed significantly over the years.
‘To be able to hold our local competition on one of the state’s best netball facilities, is something that we are extremely proud of. We look forward to hosting more regional and state events in the future.’
Construction is scheduled to begin in November 2021 and completed in April 2022.
