One of Maitland's biggest summers yet
As we move into the last of our summer months I thought it would be nice to reflect on the many wonderful events and activities that have been happening this season.
Summer in Maitland is a Council initiative that has, in my opinion, been extremely successful in getting locals out and about and enjoying their city. While you may have heard of Summer in Maitland, you might not realise just how wide ranging it has been.
Some of the bigger events that come under Summer in Maitland include New Year’s Eve, Australia Day in Maitland Park and of course Riverlights next weekend, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
My particular favourites are the Poetry Slam in the Park, the Summer in Maitland Celebration at The Levee and the 20 Years On activities at Maitland Gaol.
The Poetry Slam in the Park attracted over 60 people to Turner Rest Park in what was a big celebration of prose a few weeks ago. I love events like this because everyone is there for one reason, to have fun. We also had the Maitland Variety Night in the same park last week and that, too, was a big success.
Another resounding success was The Summer in Maitland Celebration at The Levee, which took place on Saturday. It was fantastic to see so many people relaxing by the river on the weekend and I loved the music and the delicious food on offer. It was the perfect summer night as well, which made for a very special event.
The other thing I’ve really enjoyed has been getting involved in the 20 Years On Commemoration events happening at Maitland Gaol. I’ve spoken at a couple of these events and I have learnt so much more about the history of the facility. It truly is a jewel in Maitland’s crown and if you haven’t had a chance to take a look, make sure you book in for one of the daily tours.
Other Summer in Maitland events this season have included:
- Lunchtimes in the Laneway
- Street Eats
- The Splash and Play at Lorn
- Santa photos
- Music and entertainment at The Levee
- Art by the River
Maitland Regional Art Gallery initiatives.
There’s also a few more Summer in Maitland events coming up before the end of the month, including the Maitland Show on 16 and 17 February and the Knights v Eels NRL Trial Match on 24 February.
This initiative has been excellent for our community, it’s meant that local people have stayed in Maitland to enjoy many of these events, contributing to our city’s economy and having fun right in our own backyard.
