Microchipping and registration
More than 150,000 dogs and cats are lost or stolen every year in NSW, so microchipping and registration is an important part of owning a pet. Better yet, it's a simple two step process.
By creating a profile on the NSW Pet Registry you will be able to:
- update your contact details such as a change of address
- transfer ownership of your pet
- report your pet as missing or deceased
- pay most lifetime registration fees online.
As of from the 1 July 2020, it is required you get an annual permit (in addition to the lifetime pet registration) if:
- you own a dog of a restricted breed or declared to be dangerous
- you own a cat not de-sexed by four months of age.

THREE FREE PET MICROCHIPPING DAYS
Council is hosting three, free pet microchipping days coming to a suburb near you in September and October 2022.
Maitland residents are invited to join us at the free events, all from 10.00am to 2.00pm, at:
- 48 Kingstown Road at Woodberry, Wednesday 14 September
- Wattle Park at Metford, Wednesday 28 September
- O’Hearn Street Park at Tenambit, Saturday 8 October
No bookings are required, just turn up on the day. You’ll need to bring proof of Maitland residence (like a driver’s licence or rates notice), and please make sure that dogs are on leads and cats are contained when you come along.
In addition to free pet microchipping, the Maitland Animal Management Facility team will be on site to provide more information about their subsidised desexing programs, and a Council ranger will be in attendance to answer your questions.
There will be separate zones for small and big dogs, plus cats. If you believe your animal is aggressive, or could be, please call the Maitland Animal Management Centre on 0438 742 541 prior to attending
Cats and dogs in NSW must be microchipped by the time the animal is 12 weeks old. If your pet is not microchipped when it is purchased or comes into your care, then please contact your local vet.
Pet microchip records can only be created by a vet, an authorised microchip implanter or a council.
Once your pet is microchipped its details will be stored in the NSW Companion Animal Register and you will be issued with a certificate...
To register your pet online, visit petregistry.nsw.gov.au You will need to have your driver’s licence, passport or Medicare card handy to create your Pet Registry account.
Your pet’s record must already exist before you can ‘claim’ it on the pet registry website.
The cost of registering your pet may vary depending on your circumstances:
- $59 for a desexed or not desexed cat ($85 annual permit for not desexed)
- $69 for a desexed dog
- $234 for a not desexed dog
- $59 for a not desexed cat kept by a registered breeder
- $69 for a not desexed dog kept by a registered breeder
- $29 for a desexed cat or dog owned by an eligible pensioner
- $206 annual permit for a dangerous or restricted dog
- $0 for all dogs and cats adopted from the pound or shelter, or assistance animals.
