Council encourages active ageing and recognises and celebrates the many benefits that the ageing population contribute to the community.
Maitland’s population is ageing, reflective of the national trend, with the proportion of population aged 65 or over slightly increasing from 11.7% in 2006 to 14.3% in 2016. The proportion of the population classified as elderly, (75 or over) is 6%, slightly lower than the NSW figure.

The 2019 NSW Seniors Festival took place from 13 - 24 February 2019.
A wide variety of activities and events were on offer during the festival including arts, dance and writing events, darts, carpet bowls and even a rock concert featuring Lonnie Lee and the Leemen.
