Council encourages active ageing and recognises and celebrates the many benefits that the ageing population contribute to the community.
Maitland’s population is ageing, reflective of the national trend, with the proportion of population aged 65 or over slightly increasing from 11.7% in 2006 to 14.3% in 2016. The proportion of the population classified as elderly, (75 or over) is 6%, slightly lower than the NSW figure.

This year’s Seniors Festival will take place from Friday 25 March to Sunday 3rd April 2022.
The official NSW theme for 2022 is ‘Reconnect’, which is particularly powerful after a socially and physically distanced year. Seniors Festival celebrates the role older people play in our communities and their contributions.
In 2022, Seniors Festival will focus on activities and events that reconnect our Seniors community. A wide variety of events will be running during the festival to encourage older people to get involved in art, fitness, outdoor, and social activities.
